![]() In this article, I will to explore why some children continue with oral sensory seeking past this age. This behaviour typically reduces from eighteen months but it can continue until two years of age. The mouth acts like a second pair of eyes, giving the brain extra information about the objects in the world. It helps them to learn more about an object, such as how big is it, how hard or soft is it, and its shape. This helps their sensory motor development. It is very normal for children to put everything into their mouth between the ages of 18-24 months. Sucking is also an important survival reflex, which is essential for feeding.Īs they get older, infants then use their mouth to explore the world. It explains why dummies or pacifiers work so well to help calm down an upset baby. This self-soothing can also be called self-regulation. They use sucking to help to calm themselves and self soothe. Oral sensory seeking behaviour, or mouthing items, is a normal behaviour in babies and infants. It still has some chewability to it, but it's fairly rigid / pretty firm.Oral seeking is part of normal development XXT / Very Firm - This is the toughest level, which we call XXT ("Xtra Xtra Tough").Standard - This is the softest level, recommended for mild chewers (those who do not chew through anything).Like all other ARK chews, it comes in 3 colour-coded toughness levels: It's long enough to reach the back molars for proprioceptive input to the jaw and masseter muscle. Made in the USA, this chew tool is a safe outlet for anyone who needs to chew, and an effective way to help calm, self-regulate, and focus. Optional breakaway cords can be purchased. The MEGA Bite Saber has about 2 times the weight/bulk of the original Bite Saber - great for stronger chewers and/or for individuals looking for something larger.ĪRK's MEGA Bite Saber® is a handheld chew and does not come on a cord by default, but it does have a hole on one end in case you'd like to add one. The MEGA version sold here measures about 5.8" long. The classic/original Bite Saber® (sold separately) measures about 4" long. What's the difference? The MEGA version is much bigger! Wider. Check out the Tetra-Bite for exampleĪRK's MEGA Bite Saber® is very similar to the original and popular Bite Saber® necklace. Note: if you are looking for a long lasting chew tool for avid chewing, we recommend solid chews over hollow chews. It still has some chewability to it, but it's fairly pretty firm (although not as firm/tough as our solid chews) It's firmer, but still fairly chewy, recommended for moderate chewers XT / Medium Firm - This is the middle level, which we call XT ("Xtra Tough").Standard - This is the softest level, recommended for mild chewers (those who do not chew through anything) and/or those with limited jaw strength.Like all ARK chews, the Bite Tube is available in 3 colour-coded toughness levels: Because the hollow tube provides less resistance than solid chews like the Grabber, this is a great "starter" chew tool for individuals with very limited jaw strength. The two different diameters allow you to work on varying jaw heights. Put pureed foods inside the tube for functional biting/chewing practice - when the individual bites down, they will be rewarded with a taste of food. As an oral motor tool, use it to practice biting/chewing skills without the risk of choking, to build jaw strength and stability, and to exercise the mouth muscles. The tube-like extension is perfect for individuals who want their chew tool to "collapse" more, whether as a sensory chew and/or in feeding therapy. It can also be used as an oral motor tool to work on jaw strength and stability. ![]() Use it as a safe outlet for anyone who needs to chew. More detailed instructions are included.ĪRK's Bite Tube is a hollow chew tool with a different diameter on each end. Eventually transition to the smaller diameter buttons as the individual progresses. Have the individual close their lips around the button while you pull and do a gentle "tug and pull" motion for resistance. Starting with the largest button that comfortably fits in the individual's mouth, place the "button" inside the lips (in front of the teeth). 8" in diameter (labeled 3 and 4, respectively). 6" in diameter (labeled 1 and 2, respectively). ARK's proButton set offers a safer, professional upgrade of that classic oral motor exercise - no more small parts or thin string to worry about!Įach proButton™ set includes two double-sided handles for a total of four different "button" diameters. Speech therapists have been doing a "button pull" lip closure activity with their clients since the 1970s by tying string through buttons. ARK's proButton™ Set is a fun and engaging way to work on lip closure and lip strength, fundamental skills needed for proper speech and feeding development.
